When we bend ourselves to material desires – a new car, a new home, for instance – we increase their intensity and their number. Our wishes increase and we become less and less satisfied, and more and more incapable of satisfying them.

Born John Khilla in Sydney 1979, MK-1 aka Mista Killa began DJing at the age of 15 with the aid of mentor and friend, New York’s legendary DJ Steve Dee (founder of the X-men and inventor of the funk a.k.a beat juggling).

By the age of 18 MK-1 had developed his own distinct style of DJing, shunning the many cultural clichés of the Hip-Hop scene.

With sets geared more towards a showcase celebrating music past to present, Mista Killa is certainly a rare breed of current DJ’s who prides himself in rocking good music – PERIOD. Never limiting himself by a genre, Mista Killa, born John Khilla, is a Sydney native who has developed his own unique style and technique which has set him aside from the stereotypical DJ found at most clubs around the globe. JC //

JC grew up in London exposed to the sound of mainstream popular music. It wasn’t until 1982 when a friend introduced JC to ‘Planet Rock’ by Afrika Bambaataa that his love affair with Electro Funk, Hip Hop and vinyl began. “I started doing odd jobs and saving money so I could purchase vinyl and started collecting as much Hip Hop records as I could. At the age of 16 I got my first set of turntables, they were a very old set of decks and mixer combined in one large ‘coffin’ style case – we are talking old school!”

By the time JC hit 18, he was running a mobile disco that lasted three years, playing in local bars, birthday parties and weddings alongside his best friend at the time. After many years playing odd events, and Djing at parties, John moved to Sydney in 1995, learning about the Australian music scene landing himself various DJ parties, eventually playing at the after party for the ‘Take It to The Bridge’ boat party in Sydney 2001. Later in 2001 went to live in Dublin, Ireland for two years, JC hosted a radio show in Dublin for 14 months called the “All Funked Up Show” on Jazz FM 89.8, in addition to DJing at events. His show not only attracted an enormous following, but also sparked his love for radio broadcasting.

JC returned to Australia in 2003 playing out at various venues, scoring a weekly radio show on Bondi FM called ‘The Funkdafied Show’ which he hosted for 7.5 years. In that time, JC secured interviews with elite musicians/DJs including Norman Jay, Micheal Franti, Ohmega Watts and many more. JC currently hosts the Hardway Show on Eastside 89.7 FM every 3rd Saturday. You can get more info at, this is the premier radio station in Sydney playing Jazz and Soul music.

Over the past 9 years JC has played at every major venue in Sydney and held down several residencies, he has also played at several major festivals including Sydney Festival, Playground Weekender, Surry Hills Festival and more. Benny Hinn (Daniel Robertson) began spinnin’ vinyl back in 01′ playing a range of phat funky house and some chunky big assed broken beatz for the masses… Although now only 33, the Hinns has played at some of the finer establishments, parties and festivals around Sydney, Wollongong and the Southcoast, gaining a rep az a bit of a party starter and one with some def skillz, finess and sheer artistry on a pair of 1200′s.

In 01/02′ the House & Breakz movement exploded in his hometown of Wollongong and the Hinn emerged as one Da Gongs leading DJs in this new exciting scene. Largly due to while studying at University, a small collective formed, with a desire to bring decent music to the local area, hence the weekly event night Bustin’ was born. It began as the official uni after-garden party, held in the backroom of the Illawarra hotel, then quickly expanded into a weekly night at the famous Cooneys Tavern, where the guys & a certain little monkey, hosted some of the finest local, national and international talent for some of the best parties the area had ever seen. The night was a 7 year success and those lucky enough to have experienced a Bustin’ party will remember some good shit went down.

The Hinn has also toured with the MOS Label for an Anunal release and has supported many artists such as, The Stanton Warriors, Freq Nasty, Krafty Kuts, A Skillz, Jay Jay, Sneaky Sound System, The Resin Dogs, Katalyst, Koolism, [love] Tattoo, Mark Dynamix, Ajax [RIP], Bang Gang, Goodwill, Alex Taylor, Funktrust, Purple Sneaker DJs + many many more…

The Hinn has also been dipping into a little production here and there with a few little mashes and beats all up on his soundcloud page.

His latest venture has been PLAY BAR. After drawing inspiration from his last stint in Melbourne and meeting his partner & co-owner Sarah, the two worked hard to build, what they hope to be for many years to come, an institution in Surry Hills Sydney.
