Sax-drenched soul. That’s where it’s at for Joel Sena. Fusing soul, jazz and funk, he has crafted a bold sound that inspires and resonates with people.

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Joel comes from humble beginnings. After studying at the Australian Institute of Music, Joel quickly became one of the most sought after Saxophonists in town. He has toured and recorded with many well established acts including Lionel Cole (Mariah Carey), Deana Martin (Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis) and Michael Duchesne (The Voice).

After a solid few years of playing as a sideman it was time for Joel to step out as an artist in his own right, introducing himself as a songwriter and producer. In 2015 Joel travelled to New York with his sax on his back, jamming with members of Lauryn Hill’s horn section and studying with renowned saxophonist Troy Roberts. Inspired upon his return, Joel went on to write and release his debut self-titled EP in 2016. The record was a combination of beautifully crafted instrumentals and soulful songs featuring the sultry vocals of Phoebe Day. It was played across multiple radio stations including Eastside FM (Sydney) and NRG FM (Melbourne). Joel received coverage across various publications including Tone Deaf, The Brag, The Music and the Aussie Music Weekly. He officially launched the EP at Slyfox in Enmore. Playing to a full house, Joel gave the audience an inspired performance they won’t soon forget.

2017 is Joel’s year to follow up and step up his game. He plans to release a second 5 track EP later this year with a bold new sound. Drawing inspiration from the greats (Miles Davis, Jill Scott, Michael Brecker and Kenny Garrett), Joel has pushed his music into new territory. This record is all about holding nothing back, rolling a hard six and moving forward.

“I thought long and hard about how to record this EP. The musicians, equipment and location all had a huge impact on creating the sound I wanted. It’s edgy, punchy and unashamedly me. I didn’t want to play it safe or create music that’s the flavour of the day. The songs are about real issues that hit home for me. It’s intentional in every way. I can’t wait to share it with the world.”

The upcoming recording features two of Australia’s most prominent musicians – Mike Pensini (Deni Hines, James Morrison) and Buddy Siolo (Delta Goodrem, Jess Mauboy). Phoebe Day returns with her incredible vocal style for two songs on the EP.

In addition to his own original music, Joel has produced up and coming singer/songwriter Phoebe Day’s debut recording. He is also lending his signature sax sound to her music, due for release later this year. Joel plans to forge new collaborations, expand his touring schedule and continue pushing his music forward.
