Innersoul Live #11
[TUESDAY – 01.07.2014]

InnerSoul Entertainment & Play Bar present Innersoul LIVE.

Innersoul LIVE is a showcase of music artists in Sydney. Held fortnightly, Innersoul LIVE provides a platform for the next generation of artists in the Australian soul movement to have their music heard. Set in the inner city creative hub of Surry Hills, Innersoul Live at PLAY BAR sees two – four carefully selected artists present an acoustic set of their original music in an intimate setting.

With the Australian soul movement out in full force, thanks to the international success of artists like the GRAMMY nominated Hiatus Kaiyote, Innersoul LIVE is here to keep that momentum going locally and beyond. Defying genre boundaries and stereotypes to cover everything from nu-soul, raw and real hip hop and reggae to soulful Rhythm & Blues, Innersoul LIVE is your mid-week dose of soul that will have you transfixed by the talent on display.

Artists that have previously showcased at Innersoul LIVE include ARIA nominated singer/songwriter Jeremy Gregory, Billie McCarthy, Ron E Jones, Tabitha Ojeah, Michael Duchesne (The Voice) and Chantae Cann (featured vocalist with GRAMMY winning Snarky Puppy and GRAMMY nominated The Foreign Exchange), Thandiwe Phoenix and more.

Come down, kick back, and let yourself be moved by the musicality of our local artists at Innersoul LIVE.

Having first come to our attention on the second season of The Voice 2013, Ms Murphy – the fiercely talented stage persona of Karen Andrews – was hand-picked by coach Ricky Martin to be part of his first ever Australian team. After a spine tingling rendition of Etta James’ ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, Ricky was locked into an all-out battle with fellow coaches Seal, Joel and Delta, who all turned their big red chairs to coax her onto their team.

Ms Murphy advanced through to the semi-finals, proving her musical finesse and overcoming her instinctive shyness. “It is true that when I step onto the stage I become somebody else,” she laughs. “I’m not usually that brave in everyday interactions. I am very shy and very quiet – that’s just who I am. But when I sing I’m very open and very exposed. I’m Ms Murphy.”

After months of writing and recording with Melbourne soul/funk band The Bamboos, with front man Lance Ferguson adding his signature sound to the recording, Ms Murphy has now announced the release of her brand new five track EP ‘White Dress And The Spirit’ on January 24th.

Not diverting too much from the style of music that made us all fall in love with her, the first single to be lifted from the EP is ‘Ritual Union’, a cathartic and passionate cover of the 2011 hit from Swedish four-piece Little Dragon.

From her childhood kicking around a housing commission outside Sydney, to the flashbulbs of national primetime TV, Ms Murphy has been on an inspiring and persistent musical journey her whole life, consistently drawing from her childhood influences of Motown, soul and old-school R&B.

Like a funkified psychedelic Woody Guthrie, Dexter certainly put the mileage behind him as he spent his early years hitching and busking around the world. As one of his self portrait lyrics portrays in a tribute to Jack Keroac: ‘Desolation angel, just a dharma bum, Lonesome traveller on the road’.

This is a seasoned traveller whose only inspiration was to live the artist’s way and to keep the music real.

Here then is an artist walked away from a major record deal in London in order to keep his integrity intact rather than become one of those who would become what the industry wanted them to be. That is not what a true artist does! It was on this journey that he developed his unique and mesmerizing guitar style – A notable feature that has won Dexter fans all over the world.

Along the way Dexter found the time to learn the arts of sound engineering and record production. Producing a #1 hit in the process. But it is in his song writing that he truly captures hearts. Now a multi-award winning songwriter, Dexter sells his CDs worldwide over the internet and at his performances. He has spent months on end at the top of various charts and enjoys a somewhat cult-like following of musicians and discerning listeners.
