Innersoul Live #10
[TUESDAY – 17.06.2014]

InnerSoul Entertainment & Play Bar present Innersoul LIVE.

Innersoul LIVE is a showcase of music artists in Sydney. Held fortnightly, Innersoul LIVE provides a platform for the next generation of artists in the Australian soul movement to have their music heard. Set in the inner city creative hub of Surry Hills, Innersoul Live at PLAY BAR sees two – four carefully selected artists present an acoustic set of their original music in an intimate setting.

With the Australian soul movement out in full force, thanks to the international success of artists like the GRAMMY nominated Hiatus Kaiyote, Innersoul LIVE is here to keep that momentum going locally and beyond. Defying genre boundaries and stereotypes to cover everything from nu-soul, raw and real hip hop and reggae to soulful Rhythm & Blues, Innersoul LIVE is your mid-week dose of soul that will have you transfixed by the talent on display.

Artists that have previously showcased at Innersoul LIVE include ARIA nominated singer/songwriter Jeremy Gregory, Billie McCarthy, Ron E Jones, Tabitha Ojeah, Michael Duchesne (The Voice) and Chantae Cann (featured vocalist with GRAMMY winning Snarky Puppy and GRAMMY nominated The Foreign Exchange), Thandiwe Phoenix and more.

Come down, kick back, and let yourself be moved by the musicality of our local artists at Innersoul LIVE.

Darryl Beaton takes Australian soul music to a new level, with all the nuances of Donnie Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo and Me’Shell, this classically trained and jazz refined musician takes audiences on a journey of his own brand of ‘Universal Soul’.

A multi-instrumentalist of the highest calibre, Darryl has lent his talents to an extensive array of Australian and international talent. He has recorded with multi Grammy award winning artist Kanye West and ARIA award winner Katie Noonan (George). Before venturing out as an artist, Darryl was the Musical Director for artists such as Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Stan Walker and MiG (Rockstar INXS) and has played with a vast array of greats such as Harry Connick Jnr, KC & JoJo, Jewel, Sneaky Sound System and Thelma Houston to name a few. Equally at home in the studio as producer, Darryl has numerous production credits including tracks for Mariah Carey, Deni Hines and Tina Arena.

Darryl recently teamed with long-time friends ‘Martinez’ to form Darryl Beaton & The D1 Cartel. Drawing on their diverse resources together they fearlessly explore a multitude of aural disciplines from funk, jazz, gospel, reggae, latin, rock, hip hop, and soul.

Born in Melbourne, raised in Adelaide Chris took an interest to music at a very early age. Chris was 13 when he realised that music was what he wanted to do with his life. Mucking around with the Cool Edit program, he recorded himself singing along to a Babyface track. “It was kind of karaoke,” he recalls, “but when I heard my voice, I thought, ‘This is it, music is what I’m going to do.’”

Soon after, Chris started writing songs. He’s never had a singing lesson or been taught to play the piano or guitar. “If you love something enough, you’re just going to do it,” he explains.

Chris’ first gig was singing the national anthem at an AFL match in front of 45,000 people in his hometown of Adelaide.

After his brother Guy won the first Australian Idol, the producers approached Chris, wanting him to be on the show. But he decided to follow his own path, forging his own way in the music world. “A lot of people think it’s been easy with my last name,” Chris says, “but it hasn’t been. I need to prove myself as an artist. And, of course, I have a lot to live up to, and our music is very different.”

Last year, in 2012, Chris participated in Australia’s highest ever rating TV Programme success The Voice. As part of Seal’s team, Chris won hearts around Australia and has been in demand ever since the show first aired. He has done a number of other performances since, including his performance of the National Anthem at the E.J Legends Game at the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne to a crowd of over 26,000.
