YUM YUM //

yumyum_GS_960w

The birth of soul, dub, hip hop and delta blues Sydney outfit, Yum Yum, is what one could describe as ordinary that led to an extraordinary exchange of musical minds. Some things do not require an explanation. It just is.

In May 2014, a friend of a friend passed on a USB of Jayo James’ beats to Natalie Slade. A week later, Slade wrote to one of Jayo’s tracks, followed by a few jam sessions, sealing an instantaneous musical chemistry that explored funk, reggae, dub, hip hop and soul rhythms.

Naming themselves Yum Yum after a mumbled conversation, they dropped their first EP titled “Slade meets Jayo” within 3 months of meeting.

In under a year, Yum Yum have supported hip hop/soul artist Tall Black Guy (UK), Bankrupt Billionaires (QLD), and esteemed hip hop artist and Triple J Hip Hop Show host, Hau. With the release of their new single in June 2015 and their second EP set to drop in July 2015, expect more head nodding ingenuity from Yum Yum!

SLADE //

Born and raised in Sydney, Natalie Slade moved to Christchurch 8 years ago. Heavily influenced by Ella Fitzgerald and traditional jazz, Slade’s self-taught methods – her nuanced licks and chops, were developed at her father’s restaurant/jazz bar she managed in Christchurch. Upon losing the family bar due to the 2011 earthquakes, Natalie decided to write material and master the art of improvisation.

Her distinctive husky tone and wide vocal range has seen her support @peace, Sola Rosa, Don McGlashan, The Blackseeds and Tahuna Breaks throughout the Christchurch festival circuit.

Returning to Australia in 2014, Slade embarked on a music mission finding her feet amongst some of Sydney’s most experienced and well-respected musicians, building a fast reputation in the music industry.

JAYO //

Originally from the far south coast of NSW, Jayo has no formal musical training with the exception of Blues guitar as a young kid after which he immersed himself in hip hop, funk, soul and reggae.

In his teens, he moved to Canberra and soon started DJing and putting on parties throughout the city. Some years after becoming a father to twins, music continued to call on him putting together a popular monthly reggae/dub party which evolved into a 12 piece hip hop, funk and dub band called ‘The Rock Steady’.

The Rock Steady gave Jayo the opportunity to focus on production and live performances throughout the Canberra festival circuit. With a production foundation influenced by the ideas and techniques of the great Dub engineers and motivated by Hip Hop’s innovation, raw skills and style, he treats sampling as a chance to create something new whilst paying homage to the past.

Several extended stays abroad in the USA, UK, Europe and the South & West Pacific have greatly inspired and improved his musical ideas, knowledge and collection.

As both a DJ and producer, Jayo has had the opportunity to support respected artists such as Katalyst, Hau, Hermitude, Oddisee, Houseshoes, Blu (Blue & Exile), Sidestepper (Colombia), The Red Eyes, Kingfisha, Lotek, D’opus & Roshambo, Spit Syndicate and Salmonella Dub amongst others.

His unique mixing style and charismatic showmanship have distinguished Adverse (SYD) as a Music Trendsetter and favoured Party Rocker! From 2000 – 2004 Adverse (SYD) was responsible for putting the much sort after local mixtapes “4 Da Ladies, 4 Da Gents” series into the CD players of many Hip Hop & RnB lovers, but not without the hard work, self-discipline and strong personal ethics. Self-taught the art of mixing 80s and 90s Hip Hop & RnB, it was no coincidence that DJ Adverse (SYD) devoted his time and efforts to what started out as a hobby to being a true enthusiast to Hip Hop music culture. Aside from his duties as one of the original’s of local north shore Sydney radio station Triple H FM , Adverse (SYD) was swiftly put on the frontline of the mainstream of Dj-ing throughout Sydney in the early 2000′s. He expanded his talents and became 1 of Australia’s leading MC’s for Booty Bar Australia which took him touring across the country with Booty Bar founder and Accredited ARIA award winner Dj Lenno for 2 years.

It was at this point that Adverse (SYD) met MC Noodlez (SYD) and became a founding member of Sydney up and coming independent urban label “The Groovedealers.” Under “The Groovedealers” banner, Adverse helped Noodlez form and write music for Sydney Hip Hop Trio “UNISON”, which took them across the state (NSW) to perform and promote, leading them to 1200 downloads of their debut EP. 3 tracks that “Adverse” appeared on from the EP featured on Triple J Unearthed for 4 consecutive weeks at the number 1, 2 and 3 position on the Hip Hop charts and also retaining itself in the top 20 for several months. This achievement combined with his successes with producing and performing with Australian Hip Hop Groups LP & The Architects and working closely with Mc Noodlez over the last 5 years shows that he is no stranger to connecting with an audience. Armed with over a decade of experience in the nightlife business, highly respected and loved by all who know him, Adverse has established close relationships with some of the country’s most notable and renowned DJ talents, artists and promoters.

His style is limitless with an enormous bound of continuous energy. It’s HIP HOP/Afro Inspired Music, with a lot of different twists. Nothings ever set or the same when he’s on the decks, the music is always freshly delivered.
