DJ DAMEZA //
In a world filled with disposable music and dime-a-dozen DJ’s playing web rips off a USB stick, scratch DJ’s still using vinyl are few and far between. Bare witness to DJ Dameza shredding two records simultaneously and you’ll learn very quickly why he didn’t trade out his records for a portable hard drive.
Firstly, don’t let the ‘DJ’ in his title fool you; Dameza aka James Walsh is one multi talented individual, a renowned master on decks, esteemed producer and successful event promoter all rolled in to one. Undeniably best known for his live performances, Dameza charges up his audience with unlimited genre mixes; never shying away from the opportunity to balance the likes of electronica, 70’s funk and Hip-Hop.
His motto is simple: ‘If the music is good, I’ll play it.’
Dameza’s DJ rap sheet is long and diverse; landing 3rd place in the Australian DMC finals in 2006, receiving triple j’s ‘Next Crop’ selection in 2007 with Hip-Hop group mdusu&dameza, voted 2nd place in the 2008 Ozhiphop Awards ‘Best Club Set DJ’ category and in 2009 received a winning nod in the ABC Amplified Awards for ‘Best DJ’ and ‘Best Urban/Funk/Hip-Hop’ categories.
Always on the cusp of the latest in audio-visual technology, Dameza is a pioneer in the fine art of live video performances. Together with his brother VJ Sloth, Dameza formed Acumen – a combination of live DJ and Visual skills, taking influence from global sources, both past and present. As a result of Acumen’s inspiring and experimental visual and audio ventures, support slots rolled in for Pendulum, XZIBIT and Afrika Bambaataa, plus the duo received the first ever and rather awe-inspiring commissioned work to be used in conjunction with the Australian Symphony Orchestra. Not surprisingly, the talented siblings also received first place for ‘Electronic/Dance artist of the Year’ at the 2010 Amplified Awards.
His reputation has continued to spread, both Australia wide and internationally, leading to a vast array of coveted support acts for the likes of DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike. His prowess in live DJ performances has also had eyes and ears pinned, with requests from such acts as Young MC, RA the Rugged Man and Paris Wells to back them up in live shows.
With an insatiable urge to stay a cut above the rest, Dameza sounds rings out worldwide and the best is surely yet to come.

We want to showcase the incredible talent and musicianship of those who dedicate themselves to this intricate and often misunderstood artform.
To do this we are holding a royal rumble – an all out war, where the best have to challenge each other in a series of one-on-one battles, where winner takes all.
This Year WAX WARS is back bigger and better! The event will be held during NOV/DEC 014′, kicking off on Friday 7 Nov 2014 at 8PM, in partnership with Sailor Jerry, SHURE, Sennheiser, Bondi Beach Radio, Showtime, Well Dressed Vandals, Westsyde Connection and new exciting venue/partner – PLAY BAR SYDNEY.
PLAY BAR SYDNEY has firmly cemented itself in the Hiphop/Turntable scene in Sydney with its uber cool Hip Vibe, a small Vinyl only bar situated in the trendy suburb of Surry Hills/Darlinghurst, it has hosted many of Sydneys well respected Hiphop Dj’s / Acts and just a few weeks ago held the DMC NSW Turntablist battle!
The Concept centres around Turntable Battles with a difference – 2 contestants compete on 2 separate Dj rigs, each with 2 x Technics 1200 turntables and a Rane 62 Mixer. A GO PRO camera and projector screen the footage of their routines Live on the wall behind the Dj’s giving the whole crowd a front row view of the Turntablist styles, Juggling, Wordplay, Dissing and scratching techniques up close and personal.
The Event runs over 7 weeks – 4 heats, 2 semis and 1 massive final, Kicking off Friday 7 November 2014 and running weekly heats, until the Finals on Friday the 5th Dec, with each heat consisting of 3 rounds of 2 mins per DJ with a total of 8 DJ’s entering the comp.
The MC’s introduce each competitor and hype the crowd after each round, to decide the winner.
Along side the 8 DJs Battling, each event will be supported by ex DMC champs DJ Samrai, J-Red, Kuya, Mark N, Speedracer, Dj Morgz from the Thundamentals, plus more TBA including an International Turntablist for the Final.
There will also be a live art contingent, with some of Australia’s best painters on display weekly…
The Rules of Engagement
Each battle will comprise of 3 two-minute rounds nightly between two turntablists, showcasing on vinyl or Serato Vinyl juggle routines, word play, scratching and turntable trickery the likes of which have only ever previously been seen at the world-renowned DMC Championships.
The winners of these heats will then compete in two quarter-finals and a semi-final, culminating in the top two squaring off in a grand-final (Friday 19 December 2014). Their unique style and handiwork will be filmed live using two GoPro cameras and projected onto a large screen for the crowd to see. Each battle will be hosted by a special Guest MC and judged by crowd-vote, with the overall winner taking home some dope prizes. These live events will also be streamed via podcast on Westsyde Pirate Radio and Bondi Beach Radio.
Inspiration / Backstory
Wax Wars is the brainchild of Etienne Plummer (DJ Klevakutz), one of the founders of the Crown St Cut Collective. He felt that it was time the wheels of steel and those who stand behind them got their moment to shine. To bring this vision to life he enlisted Paul Conley (Cut Collective founder / Well Dressed Vandals), Sam Hannaford (Big Rig Productions) and Joe O’Brien (team.LUCiD) – Wax Wars is the end result.
Crown St Cut Collective
The Crown.St Cut Collective is a group of Sydney based DJ’s aiming to preserve and elevate the turntablist culture. The collective holds a regular scratch session at The Record Store every month with a strict vinyl only policy. Check out the collective’s facebook page for more details.
What makes a champion turntablist – is it more about selection or skills?
Razor Sharp Juggles, Clean Cuts, Precise Wordplay, Quick Mixing, Body Tricks and Dope tune and sample selection make a turntablist stand out from the standard Disc Jockey…but its playing the Turntable like it is an instrument that’s sets them apart!!
With the spread of DJing technology, has the art of spinning wax been left behind?
Not at all. With Serato and Traktor and especially the RANE 62 and DJM-T1 Mixer and a good set of Technics Turntables if anything it has allowed for more freedom and expression and this is why the artform is making a huge comeback!! You will see Turntablists in the Comp using Serato on WAX and also just straight up good old BLACK GOLD Vinyl!!
You’ve been directly involved in the record industry for years. What is it about wax that turns you on?
Working at the Recordstore for 9 years and amassing a Wax collection of over 5000 records, you can imagine I am a huge Vinyl Addict!! WAX is so tacktile and its much more precise for Cutting and doesn’t have any Digital Lag, Plus its also much better sound quality as its recorded as a continuous WAV giving you many more frequencies and a heavier bottom end and its jus plain LOUDER!!
How strong is the Sydney scene at the moment? Where will it be in five years’ time?
The Turntablist community in Sydney is thriving and there is a bunch of the next crop Talent coming up thru the ranks, Sydney and the Blue Mountains has a strong beat making community and the two things tend to go hand in hand, with a lot of the beat makers generally also talented Turntablist, WAX WARS gives them a place to get together and show off their skills and plus learn and pass down knowledge to the younger emerging Tablists!!
