The Genius of J. Dilla [SATURDAY – 13.02.2016]
J Dilla a.k.a Jay Dee, born James D. Yancey, was one of the few artists whose records were bought on sight, played until digested and then discussed among fans and critics. He kept Hip Hop relevant long after many of its greatest heroes had creatively left it for dead. Well respected musicians such as Questlove, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, Common & Janet Jackson have worked with, and been influenced by J Dilla’s talents and he is often described as “your favourite producers favourite producer”. There are many talented beat makers and producers, but there will only be one J Dilla.
For the 7th annual installment commemorating the anniversary of his untimely death and what is the 10th anniversary of his last album “Donuts”, a line-up of artists & DJ’s across Australia / New Zealand will be paying homage to the man who shaped a new sound for Hip Hop that inspired beatsmiths, MC’s and music lovers around the globe.

THE GOODS //
Bringing a sound that bridges the gaps between spaced out funk, wonky rnb and low slung house, The Goods’ flavour is both wild and eclectic yet sharply focused.
The pair behind the music – Boris Bangaltar (Jarrol Renaud) and Rosario D’Awesome (Rosario Ferraro) are both well known players in their own right, having toured or recorded with artists like Omar, Touch Sensitive, Daniel Merriweather, Dereb the Ambassador, George Maple and Porsches.
Also known for their live show, they’ve performed at their own parties and supported acts like Onra and Oddissee as well as appearances across the 2015 Vivid Festival.
Their debut single “Strong Man” and it’s left of centre RnB is set for release this December with a full length LP to follow March 2016.
MIKE WHO (Astral People) //
Renowned as one of Sydney’s most diverse and respected selectors, Mike Who’s skills behind the turntables are in increasingly high demand. Known for consistently serving up forward thinking & eclectic sets, his widely-sourced taste and deep Hip-Hop roots lend themselves to an assorted dancefloor package spanning genres, generations and continents.
Regularly called upon to support the international heavyweights that come our way, chances are you have caught Mike warming the stage for everyone from J Rocc to Bonobo, Flako & Guilty Simpson to Oneman & Quantic, House Shoes to Peanut Butter Wolf through to Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow with tonnes more to heaving effect.
When not heating up our biggest stages, Who’s mixes (including the provocative Sucker for Love series) have been blogged by some of the largest publications around the world – racking up tens of thousands of plays and shedding another light on his diverse taste. On top of an increasingly-busy schedule that has seen him play regular shows around the country and overseas, Mike has also held down a four year residency on FBi’s award-winning weekly Stolen Records show, and a month long residency on Triple J Mix Up Exclusives, broadcasting his finds to a huge number of listeners both home and abroad.
Consistently outside the box and never afraid to take a risk, Mike Who’s sets will always move feet and educate heads. From high-pressure international support slots, peak time festival sets to closing full rooms, Who’s got you covered.
SHAN FRENZIE //
Frenzie has been around the block more than a few times. He’s got well over twenty years of experience behind him, a record collection that will make any deejay envious, and a concrete rep as one of Australia’s most trusted party rockers. Taking inspiration from when DJ’s used to play for no less than 6 hours straight and transition between styles: Original Soul & Funk 45′s – check. Deep House, Disco & Boogie – check. Hip Hop, R&B, Breaks & Beats – check. Party anthems and forgotten classics – check. Frenzie has got you covered.
His Groove Therapy radio show (now in it’s eleventh year) has been broadcasting weekly on 2SER FM every Friday lunchtime and has become an essential listen to all musically savvy Sydney-siders, while the podcast of the show has garnered a huge loyal fan base in all corners of the globe.
A veteran touring DJ of the Australian east coast, Frenzie also recently rocked dance floors in San Francisco and New York – and has had support billing alongside a who’s who of DJ royalty. Infact, pioneering deejay Grandmaster Flash requested Frenzie as his official support DJ for his most recent 2013 Sydney tour (four shows in total) – and only months earlier, Frenzie could be seen cutting it up on the turntables on stage with New Yorks Hip Hop legends The Ultramagnetic MC’s.
…and it’s no small wonder – Frenzie definitely has the skills to pay the bills. In 2012 he placed second in the New South Wales heats of the DMC, the most prestigious DJ competition in the world (He’s last foray into battle deejaying was almost twelve years earlier).
But can he rock a party? Frenzie has been dropping memorable sets for years. Whether it be a one hour power mix or an all night marathon set behind the turntables, Frenzie has plenty of experience reading the crowd and always drops an entertaining set – custom built from carefully considered quality jams and a dash of turntable trickery. Not only can Frenzie mix a record, he has definitely earned his stripes as the number one chief party rocker.
Hailing from Iwate, Japan, also renowned for the Jazzy Sport label, DJ Naiki has been behind the turntables for over 25 years. While Naiki is internationally known as a Hip Hop DJ, his vast experience also allows him to select from the choicest Soul, Neo-Soul, Funk, Disco, Jazz, Reggae and House cuts.
Such knowledge has enabled him be Australia’s first choice in providing beats for dance battles of all styles, including but not limited to, Battle of the Year Australia 2003, Australian B-Boy Championships 2005, B-Boy Rely’s (Nick Power) project Platform 2013,Dance@Live Australia Preliminaries 2013 and Freestyle session Australia Preliminaries 2014. Notably he has also been the sole DJ for the Hip-Hop category for Dancekool Volumes (now on its 28th incarnation) since 2002.
Others have also recognised Naiki’s incredible skills, with Naiki supporting seminal acts such as Kurtis Blow, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Revolution, The World Famous Beat Junkies,Rock Steady Crew, Gangstarr, Mobb Deep, Souls of Mischief, Naughty By Nature, Cash Money, DJ Krush, Nivea, Black Eyed Peas, Fatman Scoop & The Crooklyn Clan and Red Bull Music Academy presents: Exile.
