SPIKE MASON //
“Spike Mason is a composer and improvising musicianer who is dedicated to developing the facility that enables him to transfer the music he hears in his head to the saxophone he holds in his hands.”
I’ve been playing music all my life, and I love it. I compose and play music every day, and realise it’s what I need to do for the rest of my life.
I’ve worked with many musicians over the past 28 years, in Australia, the USA, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Greece, Singapore, Italy, The Czech Republic, Holland, Turkey, and New Zealand, sometimes with very famous musicians before very large crowds, and sometimes with not very famous people at all in very small clubs, or kitchens or anywhere really…
I’ve also worked as a session musician with many diverse artists, recording, composing, arranging, and producing on over 100 albums, and also on film soundtracks and television shows.
I’ve studied music over the years too and have been awarded:
Masters of Music In Jazz Performance
Bachelor of Music
Bachelor of Education
Associate Diploma of Jazz Studies.
I very much like this quote by Howard Thurman…
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
I’m very blessed to be doing what makes me come alive…
THE DARREN HEINRICH TRIO //
Darren Heinrich is a versatile Sydney-based pianist & organist, who holds a 1st class Honours degree in Jazz from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied with Judy Bailey and Kevin Hunt. His influences incorporate the entire spectrum of the Jazz idiom, from its earliest ragtime roots to modern jazz. He regularly gigs with his own trio and freelances with a wide variety of acts both locally and abroad. During the last five years his focus has been jazz organ music, travelling to the US to study with Hammond masters Dr. Lonnie Smith and Tony Monaco, and writing a thesis comparing the styles of Jimmy Smith and Larry Young.
The Darren Heinrich Trio is a classic Hammond Organ combo – Organ/Guitar/Drums. The music’s emphasis is groove, with equal parts tradition and innovation. Original music by Darren forms a significant part of the band’s repertoire in addition to standards and blues.
