Cooking With Caustic
+ Raine Supreme & Benny Hinn on the warm up…
Taking to the stage with violin, keyboards and turntables, The Asthmatix have been blending the art of klezmer, hip hop, middle eastern melodies and turntablism since 2007. Band members include Micha ‘Morphingaz’ Walter on beats & cuts, Daniel ‘Weltmachine’ Weltlinger on violin, Daniel ‘Flying Wood’ Pliner on keys & melodica and occasionally Yossi ‘Asparagus’ Mlynsky on decks.
“The Asthmatix offer a delightfully zany take on instrumental hip-hop with their blend of jazz, sample-driven electronica and traditional Jewish music.” – Erin Felton (Deaf Ambitions)”
The Asthmatix have recently returned from the European summer where they traced their Baltic roots in Lithuania and Latvia, composed new sounds on keyboards and portable turntables purchased at Hamburg and Berlin flea markets and they recorded atmospheres from the Jerusalem shuk, the seas of Stockholm and the gypsy festivals of Germany.
The Asthmatix have nearly completed producing their first full length album and are currently planning an Australian tour in late April with a return visit to Europe this year for summer.
Australia’s Morphingaz is a man with more cut, slices and dices than any master chef, hand- crafting custom-made recipes to dazzle the musical palates of any discerning crowd. His pedigree is show material with a DJ career that began at thirteen.
Since digging his heels in at the original internet radio station GAIALIVE.COM in London in 2000, he spent fruitful European summers as tour DJ for pop revolutionary Mocky and scratching alongside Canadian supervillain Chilly Gonzales. After producing original material under MaS P for artists like Est’elle, Seanie T and Kate Havnevick, he continued his journey supporting musical icons such as James Brown, DJ Premier and DeLaSOul with Californian rapper, Aphletik.
Morphingaz is currently completing the production of a debut album with fellow klezmer meets instro hip hop n jazz band The Asthmatix among some other side projects.
COOKING WITH CAUSTIC (Production Set)
The Blue Mountains have produced an impressive array of musical talent over the years, and 2014 is set to be a great year for 10 piece collective Cooking with Caustic. With a fresh and dynamic take on soul, funk and hip hop, the band blends intricate, mood-driven instrumentals alongside tracks which showcase a variety of guest vocalists and MCs.
Their upcoming album features an outstanding collection of guest vocalists; including respected Sydney hip hop artists P.smurf, Mikoen and Mute MC from Daily Meds and Reverse Polarities, Madame Wu, Tenth Dan, Loose Wayne and Broken Thought Theory. Evan Jones from soul duo Jones Jnr makes an appearance, along with the smoky jazz tones of Charlotte Craib. At the heart of the band’s vocal line up lie the diverse and soulful voices of Queen B and Blackjack Davey.
The band recently released the first single from their album ‘Natural Selection’, along with an extraordinary Godzilla-esque stop-motion film clip made by photographer Pat Bowden.
Cooking with Caustic have produced music for Thundamentals, Tuka, Madame Wu and Two Toes. They have also had two tracks chosen to appear on Sydney’s iconic Free the Beats series, and have done remixes for Daily Meds, Thundamentals and NZ band Sola Rosa.
Raine Supreme has quickly become the go-to DJ for all things Hip Hop, soul and funk. He regularly plays all around Sydney, and has held residencies at the most frequented concert venues, bars & clubs.
His incredibly vast catalogue of music, and innate ability to remember small details about each of the releases, has earned him the title of Mr. Encyclopedia of Music. Already he has shared the stage with some big names including, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Pharoahe Monch, De La Soul, Charlie 2na, Apollo Brown, Def Wish Cast, Dj-JS1 (Rock Steady Crew), Boogie Blind (The X-Ecutioners), Afrika Bambaataa, Dj Suspect, Blak Twang, Dj MK, @peace and many more. As well as being an audio enthusiast, he also extends his love for music into the video realm, both as a solo artist and as apart of his AVDJ duo, NTSC, which sees him team with Sydney visual veteran, VJ Spook. Raine Supreme also throws his promoter hat on, working under the banner of HomeyDontPlayDat, and has been behind some incredible events in Sydney such as the 2013 DMC NSW Finals, Destino @ The Abercrombie, Soul Shaker @ The Newtown Hotel and more!
Benny Hinn (Daniel Robertson) began spinnin’ vinyl back in 01′ playing a range of phat funky house and some chunky big assed broken beatz for the masses… Although now only 33, the Hinns has played at some of the finer establishments, parties and festivals around Sydney, Wollongong and the Southcoast, gaining a rep az a bit of a party starter and one with some def skillz, finess and sheer artistry on a pair of 1200s.
The Hinn has also toured with the MOS Label for an Anunal release and has supported many artists such as, The Stanton Warriors, Freq Nasty, Krafty Kuts, A Skillz, Jay Jay, Sneaky Sound System, The Resin Dogs, Katalyst, Koolism, [love] Tattoo, Mark Dynamix, Ajax [RIP], Bang Gang, Goodwill, Alex Taylor, Funktrust, Purple Sneaker DJs + many many more…
The Hinn has also been dipping into a little production here and there with a few little mashes and beats all up on his soundcloud page.
His latest venture has been PLAY BAR. After drawing inspiration from his last stint in Melbourne and meeting his partner & co-owner Sarah, the two worked hard to build, what they hope to be for many years to come, an institution in Surry Hills Sydney.
