Skratch feat. Frenzie, DJ Perplex & Benny HInn [SATURDAY – 14.11.2015]
Big night coming up featuring Shan Frenzie (2ser – Groove Therapy), DJ Perplex (3xAUS DMC Champ) & Benny Hinn (Play Bar Sydney)
SHAN FRENZIE //
Frenzie has been around the block more than a few times. He’s got well over twenty years of experience behind him, a record collection that will make any deejay envious, and a concrete rep as one of Australia’s most trusted party rockers. Taking inspiration from when DJ’s used to play for no less than 6 hours straight and transition between styles: Original Soul & Funk 45′s – check. Deep House, Disco & Boogie – check. Hip Hop, R&B, Breaks & Beats – check. Party anthems and forgotten classics – check. Frenzie has got you covered.
His Groove Therapy radio show (now in it’s eleventh year) has been broadcasting weekly on 2SER FM every Friday lunchtime and has become an essential listen to all musically savvy Sydney-siders, while the podcast of the show has garnered a huge loyal fan base in all corners of the globe.
A veteran touring DJ of the Australian east coast, Frenzie also recently rocked dance floors in San Francisco and New York – and has had support billing alongside a who’s who of DJ royalty. Infact, pioneering deejay Grandmaster Flash requested Frenzie as his official support DJ for his most recent 2013 Sydney tour (four shows in total) – and only months earlier, Frenzie could be seen cutting it up on the turntables on stage with New Yorks Hip Hop legends The Ultramagnetic MC’s.
…and it’s no small wonder – Frenzie definitely has the skills to pay the bills. In 2012 he placed second in the New South Wales heats of the DMC, the most prestigious DJ competition in the world (He’s last foray into battle deejaying was almost twelve years earlier).
But can he rock a party? Frenzie has been dropping memorable sets for years. Whether it be a one hour power mix or an all night marathon set behind the turntables, Frenzie has plenty of experience reading the crowd and always drops an entertaining set – custom built from carefully considered quality jams and a dash of turntable trickery. Not only can Frenzie mix a record, he has definitely earned his stripes as the number one chief party rocker.
DJ PERPLEX – (3 X Australian DMC DJ Champion – 06,07,08) //
From an eager teen taping turntabilism shows from underground radio, to a DJ of world standing, the last seven years have seen DJ Perplex – aka Ollie Winter – soar. Since moving to Melbourne the DJ with “hands of fury and wrists of rubber” (Beat Magazine 24/10/07) has twice triumphed at the Australian DMC Championship and landed an impressive sixth spot in the prestigious World finals in London in 2008.
A fast learner with his heart in Hip Hop, Perplex started experimenting with a mate’s DJ equipment at sixteen. Inspired by Australian pioneers J-Red and Selekt, the thrill of cutting it up live had the aspiring musician hooked. Just four years later Perplex entered the 2004 Victorian DMC heat and took out the title. Fuelled by the taste of victory, Perplex dedicated his efforts to the art; developing routines that saw him convincingly claim back-to-back DMC titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
With an aim to harness turntabilism’s complex technicality and make it accessible to the crowds, Perplex is a dynamic and engaging addition to the local and international scenes. Striving to marry battle skills with party rocking beats, his sets are tight and flowing – mixing up funky sonics, with dark atmospheric undercurrents.
Forever in search of a groove and bassline that will get a strong reaction, Perplex’s latest endeavors involve a lot of digging for dusty soul and funk records to complement electro/gutter house influences and his old favorite, hip hop beats. The result is a genre-bridging mash-up style that is as original in its delivery as it is eclectic.
Already an established name in Melbourne’s thriving club scene, Perplex regularly dishes up innovative performances. He has supported the likes of Cypress Hill, Diplo, Kid Cudi, M.I.A, Common, Spank Rock, Sait ‘n’ Pepper, Chromeo, Jack Beats, High Contrast, Lyrics Born, Chase & Status, Mir Lif and Cage, Hot Chip, Busta Rhymes, The Nextmen and Cash Money. On the international front, Perplex played a string of acclaimed shows in Europe in ‘07/08, South East Asia in 2009, an Aust & NZ Alpine tour in 2010 and has just retuned from a tour of Canada were he shared the stage with artist such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Z Trip, DJ Nu Mark and Just Blaze.
Recent projects include the ‘DJ Knows’ mixtape. Perplex’s first licensed mix is a collaboration with TDK who are distributing 10,000 copies throughout Australia, New Zeeland and Asia. Another his brand new monthly fat tape series for the Fat Kids website (imamfatterthanyou.com) showcasing his current tastes in current and vintage Hip Hop and electronic music. Perplex’s incredible skill has seen him teach classes at the United DJ Mixing School and DMC DJ school, whilst his ever growing popularity has demanded ongoing appearances on Channel 31’s ‘Heavyweight TV’, ABC’s Spicks’n’Specks, Channel 10’s Video Hits and most recently the self produced DJ Knows TV. Perplex took out the Red Bull Thre3style DJ battle in Sydney for the 2nd year in a row in 2011. Officially confirming his title as the ‘best party rocker in the country’.
In May 2012 he was asked to be involved with the Red Bull Beat Suite project. Beat Suite is a breaking down the boundaries between musical genres, classical music colliding with electronic music in the best possible way. A collaboration between the Australian Youth Orchestra, 3 renowned vocalist (including soul singer Aloe Blacc) and 6 beatsmiths and DJs. Composed and conducted by Tamil Rogeon, the one off show at the Melbourne Recital Centre was a huge success with plans for more performances in late 2013.
Perplex is currently working on his first solo album due out later this year.
Exceptionally gifted and always impressive, there’s an undeniable sense that the sky’s the limit for DJ Perplex. Already representing Australia to the fullest, Perplex will continue to command attention on both local and international stages as he continues to inspire with his diverse skills and unique rocking sound.
