Welcome to PLAY LIVE & RAW, an Up Close & Soulful Edition…
FEATURING… GAZELE & MICHAEL DUCHESNE
Michael Duchesne and Gazele are two Sydney based soulful artists who both share a deep passion for good music and writing beautiful songs. With the recent release of their debut EPs, it was a casual conversation in London, standing in the middle of Spitafields Markets that sparked an idea to do some shows together back in Sydney. Out of that idea comes this intimate showcase live at Playbar on Tuesday, 1st September.
There’s something fascinatingly powerful about Gazele and her music. Whether it’s her pop and soul musical styling, her hypnotic stage presence or her raspy yet flawless vocals, one thing for certain is that Gazele is a new artist who is hard to ignore.
Hailing from a musical family, Nigerian-Australian singer and songwriter Gazele was destined to use music to affect people in a profound way. A graduate of the Australian Institute of Music, Gazele made a name for herself as an in demand session musician and backing vocalist for 5 years before taking the leap to establishing herself as an artist. Taking the reality TV route a few years back, with an appearance on X-Factor, Gazele learnt what music meant to her and what she wanted her impact to be. While singing backing vocals with high profile Australian singers such as ARIA award winning pop star Jessica Mauboy and Diana Rouvas (The Voice, Season 1), Gazele honed her performance skills and perfected her striking stage presence, all the while keeping pen to paper writing pop influenced catchy melodies.
Gazele’s various incarnations in the music industry – from TV show contestant to a pop star’s backing vocalist have all helped shape the intriguing artist that Gazele is today. Humble yet a hustler, flamboyant, fun and unapologetically soulful, Gazele is an artist whose music perfectly balances the raw honesty of soul music with a pop sensibility. With a magnetic presence and a passion to move people through music, Gazele is here and ready to pounce on the music industry with power and grace, as only she can.
MICHAEL DUCHESNE //
‘A Muso’s Muso.’… Australian Singer, Songwriter and Multi-Instrumentalist, Michael Duchesne, is soon to be a powerful force in the music Industry. He’s equipped with a voice well beyond his years and has a presence to match.
Hailing from Sydney, at the youthful age of just 21, Michael has already honed his craft as a singer and guitarist to a fine edge, performing at some of Sydney’s top live venues alongside some of Australia’s best. In 2012, Michael was a featured artist and made the Top 24 on Australia’s hit TV show, ‘The Voice’.
Duchesne (pronounced ‘Du-Shane’) has performed as a solo act along Australia’s east coast and also works closely with Sydney Soul / R&B band, Ebony & Ivory.
After opening for American artist Eric Benét on his Australian tour in October 2011, Duchesne was approached by the Executive Music Director for ‘The Voice Australia’, Louise Perryman, and featured on the show in 2012. He made the final 24 under the mentorship of ‘Coach Seal’. His final performance – The Beatles’ classic ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ – was broadcast Live to over two million people.
Michael sums up his experience on The Voice this way: “The Voice was a great experience, providing a real insight into the industry in which I aim to build my career. Filling the hours of waiting to perform by jamming with crazy, talented artists behind the scenes and then performing while backed by some of Australia’s very best musicians was awesome.
“And working with Seal? He’s a big man with an intense passion for music. He wanted to squeeze the best out of me. I’m incredibly grateful to have worked with him and for the opportunity to get my face and voice into the living rooms of millions of Australians.”
Besides live performances with renowned Soul and R&B bands like Brown Sugar and Ebony & Ivory, Michael gets his biggest kick out of songwriting and production. He’s already written over 60 original songs with a feel like… well, think Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. Think John Mayer, John Legend & India Arie. Think Earth Wind & Fire and Brian McKnight.
