Phat Play Friday pres. Cantaloop DJs [FRIDAY – 12.02.2016]
This Feb The Cantaloop crew return to Play with a wicked lineup ready to lay down the tunes…
Eclectic jams and worldwide vibes with residents Kelly & Mick, and a rotating posse of very special guests. Sip back on a sonic sangria of hip hop, funk, reggae, afrobeat, house, garage, electro, disco… and plenty of dope records that don’t belong in any category!
Kelly Kingi grew up in a generation where kids played barefoot, the Fresh Prince resided in Philadelphia, and the closest game to a Nintendo DS was a Casio MG-880 calculator. Old school! After wearing out copies of Kraftwerk’s “Electric Cafe” and Malcolm McLaren’s “Duck Rock” in 1995, Kelly emerged from his windy as Titahi Bay bedroom, migrated north, and burst onto the Auckland club and bar scene. All spare uni-student cash was subsequently spent at “Black Market Records” on hip-hop, funk, soul and reggae wax… Fast-forward nearly 20 years and little has changed. The 1200’s are still his weapon of choice, with Serato SL4 used to full effect for maximum dance floor devastation. Now based in Sydney, Kelly’s love for amazing tunes of all varieties is stronger than ever. With a 3 month trip throughout the European club and festival circuit coming up later this year, Kelly’s quest for fantastic music and unique art forms continues.
JAYO (YUM YUM) //
Originally from the far south coast of NSW, Jayo has no formal musical training with the exception of Blues guitar as a young kid after which he immersed himself in hip hop, funk, soul and reggae.
In his teens, he moved to Canberra and soon started DJing and putting on parties throughout the city. Some years after becoming a father to twins, music continued to call on him putting together a popular monthly reggae/dub party which evolved into a 12 piece hip hop, funk and dub band called ‘The Rock Steady’.
The Rock Steady gave Jayo the opportunity to focus on production and live performances throughout the Canberra festival circuit. With a production foundation influenced by the ideas and techniques of the great Dub engineers and motivated by Hip Hop’s innovation, raw skills and style, he treats sampling as a chance to create something new whilst paying homage to the past.
Several extended stays abroad in the USA, UK, Europe and the South & West Pacific have greatly inspired and improved his musical ideas, knowledge and collection.
As both a DJ and producer, Jayo has had the opportunity to support respected artists such as Katalyst, Hau, Hermitude, Oddisee, Houseshoes, Blu (Blue & Exile), Sidestepper (Colombia), The Red Eyes, Kingfisha, Lotek, D’opus & Roshambo, Spit Syndicate and Salmonella Dub amongst others.
BENNY HINN //
Benny Hinn (Daniel Robertson) began spinnin’ vinyl back in 01′ playing a range of phat funky house and some chunky big assed broken beats for the masses… Although now only 34, the Hinns has played at some of the finer establishments, parties and festivals around Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Spain, Wollongong and the South coast, gaining a rep az a bit of a party starter and one with some def skillz, finesse and sheer artistry on a pair of 1200s.
The Hinn has also toured with the MOS Label for an Annual release and has supported many artists such as, The Stanton Warriors, Freq Nasty, Krafty Kuts, A.Skillz, Jay Jay, Sneaky Sound System, The Resin Dogs, Katalyst, Sarah Love, Shortee Blitz, Frenzie, Total Eclipse, Mr. Doris, Cool Hand Luke, Normski, DJ Katch, DJ A.$.K, DJ KC, Edseven, Inkswel, Omegaman, Busta, Koolism, [love] Tattoo, Mark Dynamix, Ajax [RIP], Bang Gang, Goodwill, Alex Taylor, Funktrust, Purple Sneaker DJs + many many more…
Benny has also been dipping into a little production here and there with a few little mashes and beats all up on his soundcloud & mixcloud page & is host of the Radio Program Sydney Underground on Bondi Beach Radio.
His latest venture has been building and establishing PLAY BAR SYDNEY. After drawing inspiration from his last stint in Melbourne and meeting his partner & co-owner Sarah, the two worked hard to build what they hope to be for many years to come, an institution that brings decent music into Surry Hills Sydney. He has programmed every bit of music that has come through the venue and supported a huge range of hiphop, breakbeat DJs and just awesome beat-makers and producers both local and abroad…
