When we bend ourselves to material desires – a new car, a new home, for instance – we increase their intensity and their number. Our wishes increase and we become less and less satisfied, and more and more incapable of satisfying them
Born John Khilla in Sydney 1979, MK-1 aka Mista Killa began DJing at the age of 15 with the aid of mentor and friend, New York’s legendary DJ Steve Dee (founder of the X-men and inventor of the funk a.k.a beat juggling).
By the age of 18 MK-1 had developed his own distinct style of DJing, shunning the many cultural clichés of the Hip-Hop scene.
With sets geared more towards a showcase celebrating music past to present, Mista Killa is certainly a rare breed of current DJ’s who prides himself in rocking good music – PERIOD. Never limiting himself by a genre, Mista Killa, born John Khilla, is a Sydney native who has developed his own unique style and technique which has set him aside from the stereotypical DJ found at most clubs around the globe. From rocking plenty of the world’s most famous venues, to being one of the exclusive DJ’s for the 2000 Olympics, to releasing a myriad of mind-blowing mixtapes and singles with the music industry’s finest, and even rocking international radio stations on a regular basis.
Over the years, MK-1 has been both a resident and guest DJ at many Sydney night spots such as Iguana Bar, Lotel, GAS, Castles, Good Bar, Melt and Black Birds Cafe in addition to numerous after parties for illustrious artists ranging from the Sugarhill Gang to Duran Duran.
MK-1 along with world renowned graffiti artist ‘Spice’ head the Sydney chapter of the Universal Zulu Nation (Hip Hop’s oldest and most respected family).
SHAN FRENZIE //
Frenzie has been around the block more than a few times. He’s got well over twenty years of experience behind him, a record collection that will make any deejay envious, and a concrete rep as one of Australia’s most trusted party rockers. Taking inspiration from when DJ’s used to play for no less than 6 hours straight and transition between styles: Original Soul & Funk 45′s – check. Deep House, Disco & Boogie – check. Hip Hop, R&B, Breaks & Beats – check. Party anthems and forgotten classics – check. Frenzie has got you covered.
His Groove Therapy radio show (now in it’s eleventh year) has been broadcasting weekly on 2SER FM every Friday lunchtime and has become an essential listen to all musically savvy Sydney-siders, while the podcast of the show has garnered a huge loyal fan base in all corners of the globe.
A veteran touring DJ of the Australian east coast, Frenzie also recently rocked dance floors in San Francisco and New York – and has had support billing alongside a who’s who of DJ royalty. Infact, pioneering deejay Grandmaster Flash requested Frenzie as his official support DJ for his most recent 2013 Sydney tour (four shows in total) – and only months earlier, Frenzie could be seen cutting it up on the turntables on stage with New Yorks Hip Hop legends The Ultramagnetic MC’s.
…and it’s no small wonder – Frenzie definitely has the skills to pay the bills. In 2012 he placed second in the New South Wales heats of the DMC, the most prestigious DJ competition in the world (He’s last foray into battle deejaying was almost twelve years earlier).
But can he rock a party? Frenzie has been dropping memorable sets for years. Whether it be a one hour power mix or an all night marathon set behind the turntables, Frenzie has plenty of experience reading the crowd and always drops an entertaining set – custom built from carefully considered quality jams and a dash of turntable trickery. Not only can Frenzie mix a record, he has definitely earned his stripes as the number one chief party rocker.
BENNY HINN //
Benny Hinn (Daniel Robertson) began spinnin’ vinyl back in 01′ playing a range of phat funky house and some chunky big assed broken beats for the masses… Although now only 34, the Hinns has played at some of the finer establishments, parties and festivals around Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Spain, Wollongong and the South coast, gaining a rep az a bit of a party starter and one with some def skillz, finesse and sheer artistry on a pair of 1200s.
The Hinn has also toured with the MOS Label for an Annual release and has supported many artists such as, The Stanton Warriors, Freq Nasty, Krafty Kuts, A.Skillz, Jay Jay, Sneaky Sound System, The Resin Dogs, Katalyst, Sarah Love, Shortee Blitz, Frenzie, Total Eclipse, Mr. Doris, Cool Hand Luke, Normski, DJ Katch, DJ A.$.K, DJ KC, Edseven, Inkswel, Omegaman, Busta, Koolism, [love] Tattoo, Mark Dynamix, Ajax [RIP], Bang Gang, Goodwill, Alex Taylor, Funktrust, Purple Sneaker DJs + many many more…
Benny has also been dipping into a little production here and there with a few little mashes and beats all up on his soundcloud & mixcloud page & is host of the Radio Program Sydney Underground on Bondi Beach Radio.
His latest venture has been building and establishing PLAY BAR SYDNEY. After drawing inspiration from his last stint in Melbourne and meeting his partner & co-owner Sarah, the two worked hard to build what they hope to be for many years to come, an institution that brings decent music into Surry Hills Sydney. He has programmed every bit of music that has come through the venue and supported a huge range of hiphop, breakbeat DJs and just awesome beat-makers and producers both local and abroad…
