DJing since the tender age of 14, Klevakutz was inspired to hit the decks after he was introduced to the Sydney rave scene in the mid-90’s. He began DJing for weekly breakdance classes at Kangaroo St Community Centre in Manly on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, going on to promote his own successful hip hop nights B-Sides and The GOODFOOT – a notorious monthly Funk/Party Hiphop/Mashup – at LO-FI. Pioneering the hiphop/mash up genre of music in the Sydney club scene, Klevakutz’s diverse style incorporates everything from turntablism, hip hop and funk, to future garage, deep house and DnB. Rock up to one of his gigs and you’re likely to find him mixing it up in frequent collaborations with other musicians such as a saxophonists, flutists, drummers, percussionists, vocalists and MC’s.
Klevakutz has held down residencies at many of Sydney’s premiere clubs including; Hunky Dory, LO-FI, The Backroom, ONE22, Paper Planes, QT Cocktail Bar, Sokyo, AND, Chinese Laundry, The Argyle, World Bar, Bungalow 8, Opera Bar, Crystal Bar, Shore Club, Ravesis, White Revolver, Soda Bar, Cream Tangerine, Hugo’s, Ruby Rabbit/De Nom, The Burdekin, Kings Cross Hotel and Tap House. He’s also played Main Stage at Falls Festival supporting A-trak from Duck Sauce. He’s laid down cuts on Hook & Sling’s first EP release, the “Number Cruncher” (Hussle n Bussle). He’s also supported the likes of Paul Master, Slynk, Spend C, Stickybuds, D’Opus & Roshambo, London Electricity, Dynamite MC, Phil Hartnoll, Mr Thing, DJ Scratch (The Roots), Fdel, Myagi, Deep Child & Rennie Pilgrem (TCR), and has played to crowds in Holland, Japan and, closer to home; Victoria (Revolver Bar, Melbourne), Tasmania (Mobias, Hobart), Queensland (Laruche, Fortitude Valley, Rumpas Room, Westend), South Australia (Distill, Adelaide).
THE DARK HORSE is Klevakutz’s new creative collaboration, bringing together five of Sydney’s most elusive and twisted music makers. Combining brooding and soulful vocals, blunted beats ‘n’ breaks, slick-wristed turntablism, and horns ‘n’ effects, Klevakuts steps from the 1200′s into today to lead The Dark Horse on MPC duty, sampling rhythms and punching out patterns. Turntablist Mickey Morphingaz accompanies the hip hop beats with deft cuts, storybook solos, cinematic soundtracks and dynamic improvisation to enhance the musical pastiche of what The Dark Horse represents. Muma Megs’ soulful voice rides the tracks with harmonies straight off the soundtrack to a Spaghetti Western film featuring, horsemen, aliens, angels and white volcanoes. World Renowned Horn player Matthew Ottignon effects his sax and flute to further layer and texture this deep, dark, rich cacophony. The fifth and final member Ewan Proctor aka ‘The Doc’ holds down the grooves with Double Bass adding to the cinematic experience that is The Dark Horse.
Working at The Record Store for 8 years (considered by many as Sydney’s first stop for DJ vinyl supplies) and DJ Warehouse for 2.5 years, he keeps his finger on the pulse of what’s fresh and what’s next. He’s most recently co-founded the CROWN ST. CUT COLLECTIVE – a turntablist family that brings together international and local DJs for monthly scratch jams and demos.
