Sugarz Natural High EP Launch [FRIDAY – 14.08.2015]
Introducing the super sassy, ultra sweet SUGARZ with her upcoming EP “Natural High”. Produced by Benny Badge, the string-puller behind various other Modern Funk affairs including Freekwency, Nite Class and Silver Linings, look out for this hot-4 tracker on Gulf Point CD/Digital in the coming months.
Vinyl lovers are advised to stay tuned for a “City of Light” single b/w club remix by Booshank also coming soon on GP’s cousin-label Hot Shot Sounds!
SUGARZ is a unique revolving-door collaborative project spearheaded by Sydney based multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Kimberly Aviso. Known around the live music scene with her guitar, looper, eclectic musical palette, and clever improvisational skills for creating a song on the spot with a live audience, Kimberly Aviso’s exhilarating metamorphose into Sugarz comes as no surprise.
Sugarz first collaborative adventure is her 4 track debut EP ‘Natural High’ produced by the sophisticated ingenuity of Melbourne based boogie producer BENNY BADGE, whose own production skills under the moniker FREEKWENCY (Gulf Point Records) has received international praise from respected music heads in the UK and Australia.
Together, they’ve created music for a discerning audience that can arguably be labelled as ‘indietronica’, invested in the kaleidoscopic throw back sound of 80’s boogie. In an era where the Roland TK 808 drum machine, heavy synths, drum rolls, a bouncing bassline and hi-claps were as important as the lead vocalist, Sugarz debut EP ‘Natural High’ captures that nostalgic feeling.
Sugarz is not your average collaboration project. She is quirky, unique, engaged in how sound works and is sure to make you feel like you’re a part of something bigger. ‘Natural High’ delivers the pure joy of making music – music that we can all devour no matter what your musical taste.
Sugarz debut EP ‘ Natural High’ will be released in July through UK label Gulf Point
BENNY BADGE AKA FREEKWENCY //
Raised under the influence of an eclectic household record collection, Benny took to music with a passion that had him writing songs by age ten. Throughout his teens he established a strong love for the electronic sounds of 1980s funk and soul music, collecting many obscure records from contacts overseas. Benny’s love for a bygone era remained a heavy influence as the following years saw him turn from a young Bboy with hot mixtapes into a busy deejay and producer.
In 2009 Benny formed Secret Heat music, the production base and identity for his future projects. 2011 saw him relocate to Melbourne from his hometown of Adelaide in search of greater possibilities. It was here that he established himself, producing his own take on modern soul and club music with an infectious vintage styling that would set Benny apart from his peers. He has since worked with a range of other artists and performed alongside some of his most respected contemporaries as they visit the country.
Benny’s music and deejay performances are held in high regard globally, receiving notable support from Ministry of Sound Radio, Tim Sweeney’s “Beats In Space” (NYC), The Smuggler’s Inn Show (Berlin), Boogie Taipei (Taiwan/China), Hit It & Quit It Radio (Auckland) and various stations at home in Australia. When behind the decks his fondness for playing vinyl is evident, and his tasteful selections have lit up main rooms and boutique venues from Miami to Manchester.
His discography includes solo productions under the alias “Freekwency”, an album by modern soul group “Nite Class”, performance credits on Inkswel’s “Get To My Party” & “Ginseng Root” EP’s and keyboard credits for “Malaco”, by L.A. producer Tom Noble (also featured in the recent PPU Video Party 2 DVD). Along with partner-in-crime Inkswel, Benny manages the PPU sub-label “Hot Shot Sounds” and with new projects underway you can be sure to hear more of his trademark sound very soon.
