★About SOUL OF SYDNEY – APRIL 2014★
Soul of Sydney proudly present a new format for Block Party jams. In a bid to bring you the hottest of party jams & to help support the local LIVE music scene, we have decided to enlist the help of some of Sydney’s funkiest live bands for some extra added funk on the dancefloor.
Our new format we go beyond just DJ’s & bring you some of the bands we respect, the bands we go out and see & most of all, the bands we know will absolutely bring those SOUL OF SYDNEY FEEL-GOOD FUNK vibes at another level.
We have always built Soul of Sydney around a simple idea of that ‘feel good funk music’, the kind of music that is made for the dancefloor & uplift spirits. We have never been limited by tempo, genre or time signature. If it works on a dancefloor and we are diggin’ it, than you will most likely hear it.
The new format is an additional to this, another phase in this idea to push and promote the amazing live talent here in Sydney in a different environment that is out of the usual bar and club situation. If you are feeling it, feel free to spread the word and come out and support WATUSSI & SOUL OF SYDNEY on our first installment, because we are doing this all STRICTLY FOR THE LOVE & to push the music we dig in the right kind of spaces.
We are honoured to present one of Sydney’s funkiest festival bands around, WATUSSI. The 8 piece Latin Funk 8 power house lead by the charismatic frontman Oscar Jimenez, and featuring the some of the cream of Sydney’s musicians including;
VINCENT SEBASTIAN | Percussion, Vocals
SIMON OLSEN | Lead Guitar, Vocals
DANIEL SADDLETON | Drums, Vocals
MAMBO BROWN | Tenor Saxophone, Flute
SIMON FERENCI | Trumpet, Trombone
NICK GARBETT | Trumpet
PAT HARRIS | Bass
They have been making massive noise around the world after just touring asia and south america and known as one of the staple festival bands in Australia playing at everything from WOMAD, THE SYDNEY FESTIVAL,BLUESFEST just to name a few. Their Afro Latin inspired grooves are so energetic and infectious on the dancefloor & we honestly cant wait to get them on to showcase their talents as they play a rare intimate Block Party set as the sun goes down at our April throw down.

★SOUL OF SYDNEY HISTORY★
Created in November 2009, Soul of Sydney is an independent, artist run collective who are bonded by a love of ‘funk’ based music. Our people include DJ’s, Musicians, Producers, Dancers & Designers who have come together to promote and support the music we love in this city, and the street culture around it.
Soul of Sydney Block Party is our monthly Sunday musical afternoon (12-9pm) feast. Focused on a family orientated get together, DJ’s, Record Collectors, B-boys & B-Girls, and musicians come down to share & enjoy some of the music they love in a completely different environment, outside of bars or clubs.
We have an ‘open decks, open mic & open dance floor’ policy just to keep it personal and give everyone a chance to do their thing where locals can come down as our guests outside of a usual club set.
Music styles generally sit at a safe middle ground of Soul, Funk, Disco and a fair bit of Jazz & golden era hip hop stuff too with artists James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, De La Soul, J Dilla, Stevie Wonder, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Larry Levan amongst the playlist.
